手把手教你写Statement of Purpose

首先SOP的重要性，之前很多帖子也提到过了。gre toefl等成绩admissions committee 可能只看一眼，达到了某个线差别就不大了，而SOP不同，在学生成绩背景都差不多的情况下，SOP 就起了决定性的作用，不仅可以从中看出一个人的英文写作水平，还有态度，是不是认真地查过资料，know what s/he's getting into 通过SOP 可以了解一个人 1）是否适合科研 2）想研究的方向是否和所申请项目的培养目标匹配 3）是否真的对某个教授的研究感兴趣 研究生的文书不像本科 (本科的时候只需写一写你的life stories) 那么SOP 具体都要写些什么呢？拿Harvard department of psychology官方给出的建议 “In applying, please take special care with the Statement of Purpose.“ 第一句话就说SOP要好好用心写！ 总的来说可以分成三部分写 一 research experience 以前的实验室研究经历 二 nature of your interests in graduate education 为什么要继续读研究生？你具有什么research skills，甚至是缺点也可以写，你缺少什么理论、知识、技能？（正因为缺少才想去grad school学嘛！） 是什么理论或发现激发了你对你专业的兴趣？ 在grad school, 你想解决什么研究问题（为什么这些问题值得探究）以及用什么方法解决？你觉得现有的理论有什么空缺的地方吗 你希望的grad school环境是怎样的？ phd申请者一定要写出你想跟哪个教授做研究！读过教授的paper，能提出未来的问题方向。而且不一定只写一位教授，如果有两位教授都和你想做的方向相似，尽管写在文书里。 "It helps with admissions to have one or more faculty championing your case." 三 career goal phd的大部分还是在学术界进高校，如果一个项目想培养的是未来的researcher，你却在文书里说你想进公司，后果可想而知。。。 每一个学校的专业对SOP的格式要求也不尽相同，有的可能让你double space two pages，有的让你single space，还有的让你会在页眉上注明自己的申请信息，请一定要看好要求！ 字数问题：学校明确要求不要超过多少字请照做，很多人可能会抱怨 我的经历那么多 这么点字数根本写不够！！怎么办？请删减！写作的一大要点是omit unnecessary words! omit unnecessary words! omit unnecessary words! Tips: 1. Don't just say "I am intelligent, hardworking, balabalabla...", show these qualities through your past experiences. 2. Avoid cliche. 3. No need to list your accomplishments (should be in your cv/resume ) unless they are relevant to explaining your purpose in applying to the program. 4. Tailor the statement to a particular school/program. A few sentences that address why you are applying to this institution in particular can be very helpful. 5. No misspellings, grammatical or factual errors. 6. Proofread. Read it out loud.
